The fourth stage of 'A British Journey' takes us to South West England.
Regional labels are not always applied consistently in England, but this
series includes stamps from the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset,
Wiltshire, Somerset and Lundy Island, which is administratively part of
Devon.
The stamps in the set show:
2nd class - Old Harry Rocks, Studland Bay, Dorset. The great
chalk ridge of the Purbeck Hills ends at the English Channel where sheer
cliffs drop 500 feet (150m) into the sea, with the rocks standing off
shore.
1st class - Wheal Coates, St Agnes, Cornwall. The Tin Mine at
Wheal Coates stands on a ledge 300ft (90m) above the sea on the north
Cornwall coast.
40p - Start Point & Start Bay, Devon The lighthouse
at Start Point is on one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English
Coast, running sharply almost a mile into the sea near Dartmouth.
43p - Horton Down, Wiltshire. The farmland on these chalk downs
near Devizes has been the scene of crop circles in 2000 and there are
believed to be ancient tombs and sarsen stones nearby.
47p or 57p - Chiselcombe, Exmoor. Much of Exmoor's 170,000 acres
of moorland and upland farms is in Somerset. But Chiselcombe is near
Watersmeet, which is south of Lynmouth on Devon's north coast, not in
Somerset as suggested in RM publicity.
68p - St James's Stone, Lundy
Island. Lundy - well known to stamp collectors for the local
stamps which have been produced for many years - is some 11 miles (20km)
off Hartland Point on the Devon coast, and is only only 3 miles (5km)
long and 1 mile (2km) across at its widest point.
Previous sets in this series have had a 47p stamp; although the Royal
Mail publicity describes this as 47p some illustrations show it as 47p
and some as 57p.
