Ocean
Liners: including the Queen Mary 2, the largest cruise ship ever
builtNorvic Philatelics' second commemorative cover marked the end of Concorde and the supersonic passenger jet era. The third series marked the start of a new era in ocean liners with the stamp issues and maiden voyage of the Queen Mary 2, Cunard's latest cruise ship. Now we also show here the 'Ocean Liners' stamps issued by Royal Mail and our first day covers, one of which continues the modern QM2 pattern, and the other uses an 'art deco' design reflecting the great ocean liners of the past.
Information about the new liner is at the foot of the page.
The French PO issued a 0,50€ QM2 stamp on 12 December 2003 and we show first day covers of this stamp at the end of the table: all these with just the French stamp are sold. Maximum cards with the French stamp are also shown further down the page as are covers postmarked by Royal Mail in Southampton to commemorate the official Maiden Voyage of the ship to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. (These are all shown as sold, although we are waiting for payment for some of them, and they may become available if customers change their mind. Please email now if you want to be on the reserve list.)
0n 13 April 2004 Royal Mail issued a set of stamps, miniature sheet, booklet, depicting six ocean liners: the RMS Queen Mary 2, SS Canberra, RSM Queen Mary, RMS Mauretania, SS City of New York and PS Great Western. On this page we show the first day covers (and maximum cards will be added later) we have for this set of stamps. We also produced just 15 covers with the French stamp postmarked on the day of issue, and the set of British stamps also with first day postmark. Many of these have been reserved for existing customers, but some are available.
At the foot of the page are some older covers and cards - Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth 2. To order any covers and cards from this page, please email ian@norvic-philatelics.co.uk - Thank you

Like the United Kingdom, France has built some giants of the
oceans including the Normandie and France. In the year 2000, Cunard
gave the order for the largest passenger liner ever built, to
shipbuilders ALSTOM Chantiers de l'Atlantique of Saint-Nazaire,
France. The Queen Mary 2 is 345m (1135 feet) long, 41m (135 feet)
wide and 72m (235 feet) high. With a crew of 1253 it carries 2620
passengers. It left St Nazaire in the middle of December 2003 for
Southampton where, on 8 January, Queen Elizabeth II performed the
naming ceremony ahead of the ship's maiden voyage from Southampton to
Ft Lauderdale in the USA on 12 January.
The first westbound
transatlantic voyage to New York took place on 16 April, and on 25
April the QE2 and QM2 left New York and sailed to Southampton
together, the QM2 taking the lead, and her place as the Cunard
flagship, in mid-Atlantic.
